Why are summers euphoria?
Summer is euphoria because of the warm summer nights. It’s because it’s the season to bare your shoulders that you are so secure about compared to your thighs; that although you should feel perfectly fine about, you aren’t.
Summers, absolutely, are for reminiscing. They are for leaving the window open with a candle burning while you write, read, paint your nails, listen to music. They are for staying up until four in the morning while your personality brightly glows. You’ve seen your favorite movie and show millions of times, but the euphoria you feel for loving them is why you keep returning to them.
Summers are so that you can let yourself fall under the influence of things that take you away from the dust of everyday life. That absolutely includes lust. You will reminisce on all your summer romances and each new fling reminds you of why summers are so euphoric.
It was euphoric during the time you were in the trunk of your friends’ car with a guy you liked sneaking into the drive-in. Even though you had the money to pay, you wanted to feel his breath on your neck and subtle kisses in your hair. It also was the time you snuck through that Californian’s window, so you could give him your greatest gift. He’ll tell you he loves you during and you’ll beautifully never see him again. It could be for laying in the grass surrounded by all your friends at a bonfire while a guy declares in front of everyone, “Justine, if I were ever alone with you I would tell you how I really feel.” Remember when he drove you home and you refused to be on time for curfew, so you made him park at the nearest park by your house. You just didn’t want those moments with him to end.
They did and led to the time when you were proposed to. It led to when you went out of town with your friends so many times and to so many places. Summer was for the time you and your love explored a mini golf course at night. You were alone, and it was magic. At times you watched the stars with him during summers. Though, he was your deepest love, you were still always reminded of your past summer loves too.
Summers were for the bonfires that were necessary because…
there were so many times you had to purge those past loves from poisoning you anymore.
Not just of your past loves, but you had to burn all the artifacts of any of your betrayals from old friends to your parents. Any of the pain that lingered you let it go to ashes. The wind would pick up a few and send them as converted energy into the universe. For all those memories will revisit you still, but you won’t have those items lingering to keep reminding you.
Summers are also for wild adventures with your friends at night. You all need each other to get your mind off those lusts and troubles. You are all equally troubled and it makes your bond beautiful. That makes you equally wild enough to sneak out to get high under bridges. It makes you wild enough to write in ketchup or shaving cream on your ex’s drive ways odd things they wouldn’t understand. That doesn’t matter because you and your friends do understand. Summers are for climbing onto your car blaring James Blunt in the middle of the night. Even though you only have two fans, they are your most loyal. Summers are for dancing anywhere and everywhere with your girls. You feel the heat kissing your skin and let go.
Summers are for crying at home alone because you don’t want your best friends to know that you’re still hurting from those things that happened so long ago. You show them you’re fine by dancing in the rain at those wicked summer concerts. You show them you’re fine for holding your alcohol well even though you vomit discreetly. And the times it isn't discreet they will never blame you.
Summers are for running away even though you know you can’t go far. Your friends will find you eventually, but you just need to run. You’re intoxicated and looking for adventure. You want to be intoxicated by love, even though love betrayed you.
The summers you aren’t looking for love are when you are your most vivid self. You’re dedicating your love to all the people and things that matter. You explored Italy in the summer. You learned so much and it was euphoric in that it filled your heart with lives and loves of the past. You fell in love with a small town that hosted you for three weeks. You fell in love with the architecture, the food, the language. You saw the art you were already deeply in love with. You fell in love with all the medieval reminders of people who spent summers archaically.
Summers represent a deeper euphoria for you because you don’t have to be in love to have a good summer. Love will betray you, but you can reach euphoria without love. Fall being the afterglow of summer, Winter the neutral muted calm, Spring the build-up. Summer will return over and over again
….like a perfect euphoria.
